Courage without envy

“And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.”1 Samuel 18:14 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 1 Samuel 17–18.

David confronts Goliath in confidence that the battle belongs to the Lord. His growing success then awakens Saul's jealousy, while Jonathan responds with friendship. The contrast shifts attention from a visible enemy to the danger within a fearful heart.

David's particular victory does not guarantee that believers will win every conflict. The wider story also asks how we receive another person's gifts. Envy turns someone else's usefulness into a threat, whereas faithful friendship can rejoice without needing the centre of attention.

Name a person whose success unsettles you. Offer sincere encouragement and examine the fear beneath your comparison. When facing your own challenge, prepare responsibly and seek faithfulness rather than a performance that will make you admired.

Lord, give me courage for the duty before me and generosity toward the gifts of others. Free me from comparison, and teach me to celebrate good work without needing its praise. Amen.
