A household choice

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”Joshua 24:15 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Joshua 23–24; Judges 1.

Near the end of his life, Joshua calls Israel to put away rival gods and serve the Lord. The covenant response must outlast his leadership. The opening of Judges then begins to reveal how difficult continuing faithfulness will be.

A public declaration is a beginning that must become daily allegiance. Joshua's household commitment does not grant permission to coerce another person's conscience. Christian leadership in a home is expressed through example, truthful teaching and love rather than spiritual intimidation.

Identify one competing loyalty that shapes your home more than you want to admit. Invite a practical conversation about time, priorities or treatment of others. Begin with your own conduct instead of announcing rules you do not intend to live by.

A question to sit with

What does the pattern of my household's life say we serve?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Change one personal habit that undermines the faith or kindness you hope to nurture at home.

Let us pray

Lord, receive my allegiance in the ordinary life of my home. Expose competing loyalties, give me courage to change my conduct and make my influence patient, truthful and loving. Amen.
