Hear the warning carefully

“But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:”Deuteronomy 28:15 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Deuteronomy 28.

Moses describes blessings for covenant faithfulness and devastating consequences for persistent rebellion. The chapter addresses Israel as a covenant people and reaches toward the suffering of siege and exile. Its severity asks readers to take their choices seriously.

This national covenant warning must not be used to diagnose every sufferer's life as sinful. Scripture elsewhere records faithful people who suffer deeply. The chapter exposes the destructive course of collective disobedience without giving us permission to explain every tragedy as a specific punishment.

Let the warning examine your conduct rather than supply accusations against a neighbour. Where dishonesty or cruelty has become normal, seek repentance and concrete repair. Meet another person's suffering with compassion instead of a confident theory about its cause.

Am I applying Scripture's warnings first to myself or mainly to people I judge?

Holy and merciful God, awaken me to the damage of sin. Keep me from using warnings as weapons against sufferers. Lead me toward repentance, responsible choices and compassionate action. Amen.
