Holiness has an honest scale

“Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.”Leviticus 19:18 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Leviticus 19–21.

Alongside commands about worship and family, Leviticus 19 addresses harvest edges, wages, honest measures, the stranger and the treatment of disabled people. Love for the neighbour is placed within a life devoted to the holy God.

Holiness cannot be reduced to avoiding a few visible behaviours while exploiting people in ordinary transactions. The command to love one's neighbour exposes the unfair wage, the dishonest scale and the cruel joke as spiritual matters, not minor exceptions to religious respectability.

Consider a transaction in which another person depends on your fairness. Pay promptly, describe honestly and avoid taking advantage of someone who cannot easily challenge you. Love becomes concrete where power could otherwise hide injustice.

A question to sit with

Where does my neighbour depend on an honesty they cannot easily verify?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Correct an unfair charge, delayed payment or misleading description that is within your control.

Let us pray

Holy God, bring my ordinary dealings under Your love. Make me truthful in what I sell, fair in what I pay and attentive to people whose vulnerability others might exploit. Amen.
