Useful beyond the first impression

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”2 Timothy 3:16 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 2 Timothy 3–4; Titus 1–3; Philemon 1.

Paul speaks of Scripture's role in teaching and correction and urges Timothy to continue faithfully. Titus receives counsel about sound conduct, while Philemon is asked to receive Onesimus as a beloved brother. Teaching reaches the way a community treats a particular person.

Scripture equips people for good work rather than merely supplying material for winning arguments. Philemon's appeal moves against reducing a human being to property; it cannot faithfully be used to justify slavery. The gospel challenges status by naming a relationship in Christ.

Use a passage to examine your own conduct before applying it to someone else. Consider whether a person's past or social position has kept you from acknowledging their dignity. Offer a fair opportunity without pretending trust requires no practical discernment.

A question to sit with

Am I using Scripture to become equipped for good or mainly to prove another person wrong?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Study one passage carefully and let it correct a concrete attitude or action of your own.

Let us pray

God who equips through Scripture, correct me before I hurry to correct others. Help me honour the dignity of each person, resist exploitative assumptions and put sound teaching into practical, responsible love. Amen.
