Listen to Him

“While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”Matthew 17:5 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Matthew 15–17.

Jesus challenges traditions that evade God's commands, receives a Gentile woman's appeal and prepares His disciples for suffering. At the transfiguration, the Father's voice directs them to listen to His beloved Son. Glory does not remove the approaching path of the cross.

Following Jesus means hearing both His comfort and the truths that unsettle our expectations. An impressive spiritual experience cannot replace continued attention to His teaching. The chapters also challenge the assumption that people outside our familiar group cannot respond with sincere faith.

Read one saying of Jesus that you tend to pass over. Ask what obedience requires in your present relationships. Honour a sincere question from someone whose background differs from yours, without assuming you already know the limits of their faith.
