The voice before the violence

“If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.”Genesis 4:7 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Genesis 4–6.

Before Cain kills Abel, God speaks to him about anger and the danger of sin. The warning leaves room for a different response. Cain's offering and his brother's acceptance become a test of whether he will receive God's correction.

God's question interrupts the story before blood is shed. Religious activity cannot replace a heart willing to listen. Cain's resentment becomes violence when he treats his brother as the obstacle instead of facing his own rebellion.

Notice resentment before you defend it. Christ's grace invites confession and a changed response; it does not make another person's success a threat to your worth.
