A lamp for the next step

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”Psalms 119:105 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Psalms 119.

Psalm 119 repeatedly returns to God's instruction through praise, petition, distress and a desire for obedience. Its length invites sustained attention rather than a quick slogan. The lamp image speaks of guidance for a path, joining knowledge of the word to walking by it.

Scripture is not a device for predicting every detail of the future. Its light forms judgment and directs faithfulness in the steps before us. Love for God's law belongs with dependence upon His grace; the psalmist repeatedly asks for help and understanding.

Choose a small section and ask what it reveals about the kind of person God is forming. Act on one clear duty rather than demanding a complete life map. Return to the text when your first reading only confirms what you already prefer.
