Strength for later years

“Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.”Psalms 71:18 · KJV

Read in your Bible: Psalms 70–75.

Psalm 71 asks for God's continuing care into old age and looks toward telling the next generation about His strength. Nearby psalms wrestle with the apparent prosperity of the wicked and the pain of a damaged sanctuary. Faith must travel across both years and changing circumstances.

Age does not remove a person's dignity or capacity to bless others, though ability and needs may change. The psalm's request is not a demand for endless productivity. It holds dependence and testimony together, making room to receive care as well as share wisdom.

Listen to an older person's memories without rushing to extract a lesson. If your own capacity is changing, consider one fitting way to share encouragement while accepting support. Honour faithfulness in forms that may be quieter than they once were.

A question to sit with

How can I honour an older person beyond praising what they used to do?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Spend attentive time with an older person and offer a practical kindness they actually welcome.

Let us pray

God of every season, sustain those whose strength is changing. Help us honour their dignity, receive their wisdom patiently and make room for both meaningful contribution and the care they need. Amen.
