Names within a larger story

“And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.”1 Chronicles 4:10 · KJV

Read in your Bible: 1 Chronicles 2–4.

Chronicles traces families across generations, pausing briefly over Jabez and his prayer. Most names receive little explanation, yet together they form a record of continuity, loss and belonging. The prayer appears within that history rather than as a universal technique for success.

A biblical prayer can encourage dependence without becoming a formula for gaining influence or wealth. Jabez's request is not a guarantee that repeating his words will enlarge our possessions. The wider genealogies remind us that lives matter even when little is recorded about them.

Pray about your actual responsibilities rather than borrowing a formula to control outcomes. Remember someone whose ordinary faithfulness helped shape your life. Let your request for opportunity include a willingness to serve wisely and avoid harming others.

White's chapter on the privilege of prayer is thematic related reading on honest dependence; it is not a promise of prosperity attached to Jabez's words.

A question to sit with

What do I hope an enlarged opportunity would enable me to give rather than gain?

AN EVERYDAY ACT OF LOVE

Thank someone whose quiet faithfulness shaped you and pray specifically about one responsibility.

Let us pray

God who knows every name, guide the responsibilities and opportunities before me. Keep me from using prayer as a formula for gain, and make my ordinary life a source of good to others. Amen.
